Little Girls, Mostly

 

It looks like this one was cut down from a larger print.  And it's still out of focus.  With those haircuts, I'm guessing the 1920s.  With the exception of the kid in the lower left, who is looking down, all appear to be little girls.  Notice that he's wearing an Indian headdress with a single feather.

Dated "1954."  Is the guy having fun, or is he being tortured into submission?  My guess he's having fun. 

Random Japanese Snapshots 1

 

Despite money being tight right now, I recently purchased an envelope of random Japanese snapshots.  Well, I don't know that for sure.  For all I know they all come from the same family which makes them far less random.  Anyway, I have a couple with some writing on the back.  They'll be published with a scan of the back that, with any luck, someone can translate for me, or at the very least tell me if they're upside down.  Some will be posted in lots of three, but I'm starting with a one-off of this group shot in the snow.  I'm thinking class photo considering the institutional-type building in the background.  Eventually, when I get around to putting more up, click on Random Japanese Snapshots Collection in labels to bring everything up.

Once again, and for the last time, a visit to our visually limited family.   In the first of the three posts, this little girl was seen without her glasses.  I grew up in a poorish part of the country, and for a lot of kids, if they needed glasses and their parents couldn't afford them, well too damn bad.  Click on The Specs Collection in labels to bring up all three parts. 

School Play

 I hope the little girl on the left grew up to be a great actress so she could go back home and remind people, that once upon a time, she was almost cut out of the picture.  There's a very faded processors stamp on the back, which is mostly unreadable, but "Decatur, Illinois" can be made out.

Sounds like an Andy Warhol movie.  Well, it's not.  Just three gal pals sitting on a wooded fence, photographers shadow included.

Bobby Socks and Saddle Shoes ?

Alright, how strict is the definition of a bobby sock or a saddle shoe?  I've got to admit, they're both terms I've known most of my life, but I never gave much thought to either style.  So, I looked it up.  According to the often inaccurate Wikipedia,  a bobby sock has to be white, and a saddle shoe is white with a black or brown leather band across the instep.  Neither description matches the the girl on the right.  Still, these two look like they're from the era when that sort of footwear was popular with high school and college girls, and the socks and shoes look close, so variations on a style, or something totally different?

Watching the Boys

I was born in 1955 and finished my education well before Title IX came along.  My high school had football, basketball, track, cross country and gymnastics for the boys, and basketball for the girls.  We had a little league field in town, but back then little league was for boys only.  We had a municipal pool that opened early on weekends for adult lap swimming, but that was for men only.  The local Elks Club had a golf course that any member could use, but the members were all men.  Wives could hit from the ladies tee, but only male guests could play.  In other words, girls spent more time watching their boyfriends play sports than playing themselves.   I've was never in the crowd of girls sitting at court side or the edge of the field, so I have no idea what they talked about.  Their boyfriends, something else,  or how unfair it was that they didn't get to play.

Girls Goofing Around

The name "Marianne Hoover" is written below that arrow.  I don't know why, but when I include white boarders in the scan it seems to make the image a bit more yellow than it actually is, so I don't scan boarders unless I've no choice.  Anyway, I think the saddle shoes make them look like high schoolers, though I could be wrong.

Rose & Neddy In Brooklyn

Written on the back, "Rose L age 16, March 26 1922-1115 40th St Bkyn Neddy C. 15"  I can't remember how many times I've found information that specific on the back of a print.  I'd bet, the structure in the background is an elevated train and I'd bet it still there.

The Waterbury Paper Box Co. Wedding Album 27

As I promised when I started posting this album, all is revealed.  Or at least the reason I titled it the Waterbury Wedding Album.  Well, it's not a wedding photo, but the album is dominated by them, and the black, rubber stamped caption on this photo gives us Waterbury, and the Paper Box Co.  And, it predates Where's Waldo, so perhaps the girls club was an inspiration for that silly stripped hat.  Nah, I doubt it.

Goofin' Around

I don't have a lot of color photos in the collection and fewer ones this recent.  I'm guessing somewhere from the mid 80s to mid 90s.  And they do make me think of cheerleaders.

3 Girls

There has to be some meaning to this pose.  The dresses and hair bows don't look like everyday wear to my not particularly well informed eye.  Maybe it's the prize petunias they're trying to highlight, or some weird, town celebration.
