Greenwood Cemetary

 

A bit of an apology on this one.  Stereoview cards have a curve to them.  The card stock on this one is thick, and so even after putting a couple of books on top, I still couldn't get the card flat, so the focus isn't as good as it should be.  

There is a caption on the back, "The widely known cemetery is situated on Gowanus heights and covers an area of 474 acres.  The number of bodies interred up to July, 1896, was 290,000 or an average of about 5,000 per annum since it was opened."  

The Keystone View Company was founded by B.L. Singley in 1892 in Meadville, Pennsylvania, and finally went under in 1963.  Keystone originally specialized in humor and entertainment but eventually pivoted to educational imagery. 

Rose & Neddy In Brooklyn

Written on the back, "Rose L age 16, March 26 1922-1115 40th St Bkyn Neddy C. 15"  I can't remember how many times I've found information that specific on the back of a print.  I'd bet, the structure in the background is an elevated train and I'd bet it still there.

Views Of The World, The Brooklyn Bridge

There's so much to be found about the Brooklyn Bridge, that I'm not going to put too much info in the post.  A couple of things, the engineer who designed the bridge was German immigrant  John Augustus Roebling.  While on a survey trip for the bridge, his foot was crushed between a ferry and dock piling.  He had to have his foot amputated, developed a tetanus infection and died a few months latter.  His son, Washington Roebling, took over supervision of the project got caisson disease, also know as decompression disease, or the bends.  His health was so damaged, that he over saw the building of the bridge from his apartment window.  There was a certain amount of fear that the bridge wasn't strong enough to carry great weight.  To prove the strength of the design, a parade of elephants, lead by Jumbo the giant animal owned by P.T. Barnum, were walked across the bridge.  And my favorite involves the so called war on terror.  One of the first announced success of the patriot act was the foiling of a plot to destroy the bridge.  Yes, there was a man who planned to rent an acetylene torch and cut the support cables.  I can just see some nut spending months cutting the massive cables and no one noticing.

Eastern Parkway, Brooklyn

Labeled, "BEGINNING OF EASTERN PARKWAY, BROOKLYN, N.Y." Postmarked, "SAINT JOHN PLACE STATION, BROOKLYN N.Y. OCT 26 12-30A 1917." Addressed to "Miss Anna Bennett, 104 & 31 St. New York City, c/o Dr. Sellening." The message, "Dear Annie I will wait in for you next Thursday till you get here and then we will go out, we will have a nice talk together, have you heard from Ed? Since I had a letter from Bill Stremple Monday was asking for you, tell you the rest when I see you. I also had one from Bill Brown this morning. No word of Charles & Chief. Mary McLanly."
