Random Japanese Snapshots 4

 

Well, I haven't put up anything for a while, so it just seemed easy to put up another image from this collection.  So, to recap, I bought an envelope of photos from an eBay seller in Japan.  I don't know whether they are all from the same family, or just random photos with no relationship to each other at all.  I'm guessing random since I haven't really seen any repeat people.  Too, I'm putting up multiple images per post if there is nothing written on the back, but one only if there is a notation, which because I don't speak or read Japanese, I can't translate.  If anyone can, please help me out with a translation in the comments.   To see everything that's up, with more to come, click on random Japanese Snapshots Collection in labels and bring up what's been posted.

And so it ends.  This is the last of this mini collection.  We can see the Inter State Casket Company sign two more times as well as the untrimmed gymnastics photo that first showed up in part one.  The top photo is a bit off.  So far this collection has only had photos of school girls but those two are boys.  I like the bottom photo because it looks like a group of locals are sitting high enough, on the other side of the school yard fence, to see the girls in formation.  The comfort bedding advertisement lists two cities, Chicago and Kansas City, so maybe these pictures were taken in one of those cities.  Although KC, Mo versus KC,K is anyones guess.

I suppose it's something we have to wonder about now a days, but no, the gap in these postings has nothing to do with illness.  I just didn't feel like it.  So, when I see photos taken before a major war, I always wonder how many of the people in the picture survived.  When I see something taken right after a war, and the photos in this small collection are from 1921, I wonder how many of those that they knew didn't make it.  And from a photo from 1921, I wonder how many people did they know who died from the Spanish Flu. 

In the background of the top picture you can see a sign for the Inter State Casket Company.  Considering the year, they must have been very successful.  So it's not really necessary, but click on School Girls and Caskets to see more.

I'm starting another mini collection.  There will only be three posts and I'm putting them without interruption.  Even though it's probably not necessary I am assigning it a tag, obviously, School Girls and Caskets.   And, you'll have to wait for the next post to understand the title.

So, the two class photos are each dated, "Jan. 1921."  I'm assuming the guy in front of the top picture is a teacher.  The third picture is cut out from a bigger image.  The full frame version will be in part three.  It is a good opportunity to really make out the uniform badge.  It looks like either GTV or GTU.

When I start one of these albums, I don't take the whole thing apart before I start posting images.  I disassemble the collection as I go along and discover things as they come.  The top photo has something written on the back,  Three letters, possibly the initials of the young lady and a date, 1941. As can be seen, the second photo in the column has far more information on the back, including a 1944 date.  Rather than thinking of this album as being about students, perhaps I should have thought of it as a memory album of those who either survived or died in World War 2, Bulgaria.  In any case, The Bulgarian School Boy Album remains the common tag for this collection.

Alright, two rows of photos, sort of.  The two verticals and then the two horizontals stacked to complete the row.

The thing that really fascinates me is that the photos from Dana Hall School all look like they were taken out in the middle of the country, but even in 1914, Wellesley, Massachusetts would have been part of the Boston metro area.

Looks like the student body and, perhaps, a parent in those final two photos.  I'm surprised at how mature the students of Dana Hall appear.

Which photo doesn't fit?  Clearly being a student at Dana Hall isn't all monastic studying, but an electromagnet at a scrap yard?  I suspect that the compiler of this album came from money and the source of that money was scrap.
