I'm a lifelong atheist, but as a child I was forced to go to church. Back then, people wore what was known as Sunday best, clothing that wasn't worn any other day of the week.

A Big Family
Some people have legible handwriting, some don't. Two people have written on the back of this print; one had good, readable handwriting, the other, not so much. So, the not-so-readable first. "Breyding House-Durand, Mich.-Vera born here." I have no idea if I've deciphered what I assume is a family name, but Breyding is my best guess. I really couldn't make out the town name, but I was sure of the first and last letter, so I scrolled through Michigan town names online, and the only one I found that made sense was Durand, a township with a 2020 population of 3,507. There's no date on the picture, but late 19th century is about right, so how much did the population change in 130 years?
The readable part, "Mother, Vera, Father Roy, Emma, Grandmother, Otto, George, Grandfather."

Three Daughters And A Million
Sometime in the last few days, I went over one million individual page views. And no, considering how long The New Found Photography has been up and running, I have no idea if that's impressive or not. Anyway, an older couple sharing a couch with three younger women. Daughters? That's my guess.

The Family That Stares Together, Stays Together
I've mentioned this before. I didn't start this blog to share my found photography collection with the world; I started it because it was scattered all over the place and had become too large to easily view. Anyway, I found an old box of photos while cleaning out a closet and wasn't sure if I had already posted them. I have, after all, been at this for more than 15 years. So, I laid out a dozen or so of them on the table and went back and had a look at everything that's been posted. It took a while. The idea was that if my small sampling hadn't been added to The New Found Photography, I'd assume that none of them had. None of them had, so the good news is that I don't have to buy any more photos for at least a few months. And no, I don't think this trio is on something.

Grady & May
Written on the back, "Grady & May with children & Don." No date, but my guess is somewhere in the 50s.

Los Angeles Indiana 6
I'm closing in on the final few posts from this particular album page. I have purchased a second page from the same seller that looks like it's from the same era, so when I get around to putting that one up it will have the same common label, The Los Angeles Indiana Collection. Great California car culture roadster, by the way, even if the family looks more Midwest farm than L.A.

Los Angeles Indiana 3
The last two pictures from the first side of the two album pages I own from this collection. Despite the Los Angeles-themed borders, I'm leaning toward most of the pictures having been taken in Indiana. Once again, click on The Los Angeles Indiana Collection in labels to bring up the rest.

The Rich Family
If you are a fan of silent movies, you've probably seen a film where a family with a large car, drives around a city, and don't do much of anything but run over things, and generally causes a major mess. It's hard to believe, but when those films were made, very few Americans actually owned a car, and those movies were as much about class as they were about cars. There's black construction paper on the backs of the prints, so at some point, they were cut out of a photo album. I thought about trying to peel the paper off and see if anything was written on the backs, but the risk of damaging the prints is too great.

Fun in the Forest
I bought this photo right here in southern California, and even though this is a fairly old photo, I have to say, the location looks familiar. Perhaps one of the picnic areas in The Angeles National Forest. I have to admit, though, I'm probably projecting. There is the edge of a picnic table in the lower right corner, so perhaps that's why.

Early Spring
Dated "MAY 55" and labeled "Griffith Park-Early Spring." Over the years I've walked all over Griffith Park, and while I can't be certain I'd say this photo was either taken near the merry-go-round or near the old L.A. Zoo.

The Car Crowd
One one hand, I found this photo in the same antique mall and the same booth as the picture in the last post. One the other hand it's a different format, and on glossy, rather than matte. So, Maybe a 90% chance they're from the same source, though perhaps from a different trip.
Written on the back, "3 of the car crowd. Mr & Mrs Kaught & son Robert." The first time I looked at this very small print, I thought that thing in the background was a giant stump, but after I scanned it and blew it up, I saw that it was a cabin tent. There's even a folding chair. Car camping, as old as cars themselves.

The Here, There, and Everywhere Collection-The Other Side of the Last Album Page
This must have been a family of photographers. Take a look at the vertical photo of the kid. It might be necessary to click on the image and bring it up in another window, to see the camera he's using. It's a nice one, and probably somewhat expensive. Click on The Here There and Everywhere Collection in labels to see almost everything else.

The Here, There, and Everywhere Collection-Old Granddad
No, not the whiskey. I've got to say, the lady in the one picture looks a bit manic. Perhaps granddad had to take the kid away for his own safety.
Click on The Here There and Everywhere Collection in labels for information on the title and to see lots of other photos from the lot.
