The Most beautiful Bridge on the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

 

Allow me a bit of nostalgia.  While I've lived more than half my life in California, I did grow up in Pennsylvania and have driven the PA Turnpike more than a few times.  To be honest, I can't remember this particular bridge, and I have my doubts about it being the most beautiful bridge on the highway, but I know where Bedford is, and I've been along the Little Juniata River.  

So, the caption on the back, "America's Dream Highway links Pittsburgh and Harrisburg.  Middle West and Atlantic Seaboard.  It has 160 overpasses and underpasses and 139 bridges for rivers and streams.  The most beautiful bridge is located in the Bedford Narrows."  Published by "MINSKY BROS, & CO., PUBLISHING DIVISION, PITTSBURGH, PA."  

August Vacation

 

Written on the back, "Commenc Aout 34."  French for begins in August.  Or at least, that's what Google Translate says.  From what I understand, the French take off almost all of August for a national vacation.  Did they do that in 1934?  I know a few French people who live here in California, and they love dogs.  Were the French dog crazy in 1934?

Not the safest and sanest way to propel a rowboat.  It looks like they are about to capsize.

We're getting near the end of this collection.  Only two more images and then it's done.  I tried blowing the top print up, and while I can't be 100% sure, I think that dark spot in the middle of the river is a raft.  And, of course, there had to be one picture of a woman washing clothes.  It's not that men are lazy, it's just that we don't mind being dirty.  Click on The Krystal Gloss Collection in labels to see everything.

There are only a few photos in this collection that I would have wanted if they hadn't been in this little photo booklet, and the second one in the column is one of them.  Since Bear Photo Service was headquartered in California, I'm guessing these photos must have been taken somewhere in the state.  But where?  The footbridge should give a clue.  Is it on the upper Kern River?  The Truckee?  So far, my research hasn't come up with an answer.  Click on The Krystal Gloss Collection in labels to see the rest.

Well, I think he's beside a river.  Is he waving his handkerchief or blowing his nose? 

Is This the Niagara River?

I don't really know.  I have family in Canada, and when I was a child I often found myself being shipped off to Toronto, and the route we took went through Niagara Falls, both the Canadian and U.S. side of the river.  We would usually spend some time along the Niagara River, and there were plenty of concrete slab overlooks, at river's edge, with nothing but a flimsy, steel pipe guard rail keeping little kids from falling into the river.  Anyway, there's just something familiar about this photo.  If I'm right this picture is from the upper river above the falls.

The duck isn't impressed.  This must have been taken in the spring.  It looks like a full blown snow melt flood in the background.
