The Army Hospital Album 38, The Last Chapter
If every picture tells a story, does that mean a photo album is a novel? I think not, but I do think that an album, including ones that are not labeled, or poorly captioned, can lead us in interesting directions. The Army Hospital Album's first half is dominated by the hospital itself. Because no bandages, casts, or visible wounds can be seen, I've speculated that it was a psychiatric facility, though, of course, I can't know that for certain. And then it was civilian life. Soldiers sent home, possibly cured of what ailed them, possibly not. What was once called shell shock, combat fatigue, and now referred to as PTSD. There were some teenagers pictured, 18 years old, photographed in 1963. In other words, children born right after World War 2. Others born latter. All guess work as to what it all means. But of course, that guess work, that speculation, is what's attractive about collecting old, forgotten images.
The only one of the three pictures with any writing on the back is the third one in the column. "Charles Edward Murphy born Jan 31th. Weighted-5 lbs-13 ozs. He weighed 8 1/2 lbs. when this picture was taken." Wording as written.
And now that it's done, click on army hospital collection in labels to see everything. Start with post number 1, and while it won't be like holding the album in your hands, it's the best than can be done in this blog.

The Army Hospital Album 37
And it's time for the penultimate Army Hospital post!
The top, "Larry Davidson, Age 18 August 63." The second, "Violet Ann Davidson, Age 17 August 63." The final two, "JoDy: Apple Tree Courts Lyon's, Aug 63" The Davidson twins? The cowpoke appears to be our old friend Ed Murphy, so Jody has to be the horse.

The Army Hospital Album 36
Written on the back of the top photo, "ED Murphy, May 63." The second, "Joan Davidson Age 18, Dec 62." The third, "Joan Murphy Age-18, May 63." The last, ED & Joan Murphy, Live at = Apple Tr Courts, Aug 63."
Ah, the mysteries of today's post. Go back to the actual hospital pictures, and you'll see a younger version of Ed Murphy. The first thought is that this might be his album, but then why would he have to label his own photo, and why would he need to write down his address? So, reunion of patients from the hospital? Could be.

The Army Hospital Album 35
Yes, she is sucking her thumb.
Written on the back of the top photo, "She's been doing it all he life, Connie" And yes, he is how it's written. The two cake photos both have the same inscription, "Juniors: ED Murphy's BirthDay Cake Dec 62" I've gone through so many photos that weren't labeled in any way, and now that I'm getting near the end, so much information. It's nice to have, but I'd much rather have had info from the actual hospital photos.

The Army Hospital Album 34
It's time to start the final push on the Army Hospital Album. Over the next three to five days I should be finishing this collection off. The top photo is labeled, "John Cain 1962" The bottom, "Mike Cain 1962" It looks like our army patient has not only returned to civilian life, but started a family. Is the lady in the middle his wife? Written on the back, "Virginia Cow Girl I Love You!!" So yes, I think she must be. The photos in the last post were all dated 1956. Makes me wonder what happened in that gap.

The Army Hospital Album 33
It looks like our military man has entered civilian life. The top photo, "Vieva Kost, Marie Edwards." The second, "Vieva Kost Age 17." Vieva is such a unique name. I'd love to know if it's some sort of archaic name that has disappeared from use or if her parents just made it up. And the final picture, "Ruby April 12, 36." Yes, I know. The other photos in this sequence are dated from 1956. Just based on the clothes and hair, 36 has to be a mistake.
I'll be leaving the army hospital collection (click in labels, etc.) for the next three to five weeks. When I return to the album, I'll finish it off. Hey, something to look froward to.

The Army Hospital Album 32
This one isn't the last post from this album, but the final picture in the column is the last photo from the hospital itself. I've always assumed that all of the photos in this collection are form California. If that's true, then the river pictures have to be from the Sacramento River valley.

The Army Hospital Album 31
Well, we've moved from the ocean to the desert. I'm going out on a limb here. I think the last two photos were taken in the Red Rock State Park area, just north of Mojave, which is north of L.A.

Is our patient dreaming of the Pacific Ocean? The order of the prints sure makes it look that way. All prints dated, "APR 56."

The Army Hospital Album 29
And the (almost) never ending saga of the army hospital album continues. The top two photos are labeled. "Lnt. Carson" I assume that Lnt. stands for Lieutenant. The second, "Capt. Dr. Hill." Perhaps someone out there can answer this question. Are military hospitals segregated by rank. Since a lieutenant is a patient, does that mean our photographer has to be an officer?

The Army Hospital Album 28
After spending time in the army and then a hospital it must have been liberating to see the Pacific Ocean. And, in "APR 56" there were still California beaches that were deserted. I don't know the exact location of the first photo in the column, but it sure does look like what can be seen between the coast and the northern San Joaquin Valley.
Click on army hospital collection in labels to bring up all the posts. Time to leave this series for another three or four weeks. More to follow.
The Army Hospital Album 27
Photo albums can show the life of a family or record a significant time in a person's life. Not all the photos in this album are interesting, but the whole lot tells a story that was significant for one soldier who spent time in an army hospital and his life afterward. Click on army hospital collection in labels and start from post number one. All dated "APR 56."
