Church of the Madeline

The printer needed to burn in the bottom of the picture, but other than that it's a great photograph.

Anyway, in my last post, one half of the card had a picture of the Church of the Madeline in Paris, France.  The building was designed by architect Pierre-Alexandre Vignon, started in 1806, it was originally a monument commissioned by Napoleon, The Temple to the Glory of the Great Army.   After the fall of Napoleon and the Bourbon restoration, it was given to the Catholic Church.

Written on the back, "Madeline Church."  No date, but I'd bet on the 1930s.

The Policeman's Ball

Many years ago, I lived in a camper.  For ten and half years I bummed around the country, worked when I needed to, and in the end, found myself in Los Angeles.  During that time, I was beaten by the NOPD, the LVPD, and twice by the LAPD.  I'm not really in love with law enforcement.

Written on the back, "Police Ball State Armory."  Dated, "APR 68"

Dawson Garage

This one, dated "Oct. 25, 1917," is a rich little picture.  Let's see, a cop, a street cart, a Valvoline Oil sign, Delco Batteries, tires for sale,  a Bell Telephone enameled sign, streetcar tracks, and a palm tree in the background.  And what is a half sole tire?

More Men In Uniform

For a nation that prides itself on rugged individualism, we sure do love our uniforms.  My first thought was cop, but when I blew it up, I didn't see a badge.  He could still be a policeman, but I think high school ROTC is also a strong possibility.

They look like cops to me.

Alabama Police Wedding

I don't have a lot of wedding pictures in my collection, but this one was too interesting to pass on. Probably from the mid to late fifties to early sixties, this image shows the groom and best man in Mobile, Alabama Police uniforms. One of the things that, as a collector of old photographs, I often find myself doing is speculating about the people seen. These two gentleman, officers of a deep south police force, during the civil rights movement; looking at it, I couldn't help but wonder if the groom went from his honeymoon to beating civil rights marchers.
