A Big Family

 

Some people have legible handwriting, some don't.  Two people have written on the back of this print; one had good, readable handwriting, the other, not so much.  So, the not-so-readable first.  "Breyding House-Durand, Mich.-Vera born here."  I have no idea if I've deciphered what I assume is a family name, but Breyding is my best guess.  I really couldn't make out the town name, but I was sure of the first and last letter, so I scrolled through Michigan town names online, and the only one I found that made sense was Durand, a township with a 2020 population of 3,507.  There's no date on the picture, but late 19th century is about right, so how much did the population change in 130 years?  

The readable part, "Mother, Vera, Father Roy, Emma, Grandmother, Otto, George, Grandfather."  

Let it Snow

 

It's hot out, and I wouldn't mind some cool weather.  Not snow, but lower temperatures.  I can't make out what's written on the front.  

Tourists

 

Probably from the late 19th century, or possibly the very early 20th century.   It looks like someplace with a tropical feel.  The Caribbean, Hawaii, the Philippines.  

House Building

 

It doesn't look like much of a photo, but if you think about it, it's kind of fascinating.  The clothes look like post-World War 2, a time when returning veterans were taking out GI loans and building homes of their own, and it looks like a house under construction on an undeveloped lot.

Dick and I

 

I've got a lot of photos with something written on the back. This is the only one I own where the caption is typed.  "Dick and I in front of the house."  It must have been an interesting family.  

Desert Mice

 

Written on the back, "Would you happen to know who these desert rats are?"  And below that, "1961"  Well, this picture doesn't look like it's from the desert, but it could be from one of the many subdivisions that  started to sprout up in places like Tucson and Phoenix at around about that time.  

The Dress

Believe it or not, I bought this photo because I liked the woman's dress.  It reminded me of designs I've seen in Frank Lloyd Wright buildings. 

Los Angeles via Hurricane, Utah 3

People, if you're going to cut up photographs to fit in your album, please, use a straight edge or something to make it easier to scan.  I have to wonder if this page is a record of places these two couples lived.  From the Hotel Lafayette, to the Del Rio Apartments to a nice craftsman style house.

House Proud

I'm a big believer that people feature things in portraits that they're proud off.  At a time when cars were becoming common, but still hadn't become so ubiquitous that they were kind of just there, you'll find pictures of people leaning against their cars.  In this case, we've got a low angle and a house that dominates the image.  Nothing written on this photo, but going by the clothes I'm guessing right before World War 1. 

First Fort

This is a bit of a strange one.  I had to dig out one of my best magnifying glasses to read the sign these people are holding, "SITE OF NORTHERN BASTION OF FIRST FORT TRIANGULAR IN PLAN 160."  The only thing  I can guess that makes any sense is that the military has seized land for some sort of fortification.  But where?  Some place temperate and green but cold enough in the winter to require heavy coats.  I'm tempted to go with England during the first world war, but there are a lot of other possibilities.

I bought this photo and the next two, clearly from the same source, at an antique store on the way back from a short trip.  There were others which, given the opportunity, I'll buy next time I head out that way.  So, it's a collection tagged Triangular Plan in labels.
