More Depression on the Beach
The flip side of yesterday's post, dated "August 1930." It looks like the beach trip required a boat ride.

The Here, There, and Everywhere Collection-Finally, Swimming
Swimming lessons over, it's time for the test. I'm guessing that no one drowned, but one can never tell. Go back to the previous post and see the photo of all the kids lined up in front of a building. I'm guessing that they're all from the same school, but I'm also guessing field trip to a local athletic club.
So, as usual, click on The Here There and Everywhere Collection in labels fro more photos and more info on the collection.

The Here, There, and Everywhere Collection-Learning to Swim
Well, this one was a pain in the ass to scan. Believe it or not, this was once the way swimming was taught, and for all I know, it's a method that's still being used. As a matter of fact, I once found myself on my belly, on a gym floor, practicing the crawl. Problem was, I had been swimming for almost a decade. I can't remember if I got splinters or not.
There aren't any photos on the reverse of this album page. Click on The Here There and Everywhere Collection in labels for more photos and more info.

Long Barn 2
In a nutshell, I didn't want to put eight photos in the same post, so I'm just finishing up. I have no idea if this is the Long Barn Lodge that burned down or the one that's still there.

Swim Season
I've been putting up some of my many pictures of women, and while I've still got lots and lots to go, it's time to mix things up again. With Memorial Day upon us, it becomes swim season. Although, in this day, the whole idea of a season for things is becoming a thing of the past. Anyway, it looks like a pool rather than the beach.

The Good Life In California
This is how I imagined things as a kid, way back east, in coal country, western Pennsylvania. I thought Californians lounged by the pool when they weren't at the beach, surfing.

Today's The Day
I slept late today, one of the few benefits of being under employed. Anyway, I did what I always do when I wake up. I rolled over and turned the radio to the all news station, and that's when I heard the big story. (At least as far as L.A. and California goes.) Water restrictions have begun. Silly me, I thought they had already become law, but what do I know. Anyway, those of us who live in L.A. proper have to cut our water usage by 18%, while water wasters in Beverly Hills have a massive 36% target to hit.
There are a lot of people out there who think it's some sort of regional thing. People in northern California are the big wasters, no it's SoCal that's the problem. No, let's blame the central valley. Actually, it's a rich, middle class, poor thing. The less money you have, the less water you use. Sadly, the rich folks in B.H., Newport Beach, and silicon valley, will probably face nothing more severe than fines for their water wastage, fines that the wealthy can afford. Personally I'd rip out their lawns and drain their swimming pools.
I did a with and without the color correction button on this photo, couldn't decide which version to use, so I posted them both. Written on the back, "Gottlund's 1959." No idea where it was taken.

A Day At the Beach
I don't know where this one was taken, but with the brick buildings in the background, going right down to the beach....well, it doesn't make me think west coast. Perhaps New England, or one of the great lakes, or maybe even Europe. Europe would be fascinating, since this photo is dated "August 1938," just a year before the German-Russian invasion of Poland and the start of World War 2. America or Europe, it's a view of a world not concerned with the upcoming conflict. A time when people could still go to the beach, swim, and laze about.

Rivers, Lakes and Oceans, The Travelers Collection
I admit to a certain amount of OCD in my personality. The fact is, every time I buy one of these small collections, there are a few less than interesting photos. But in the end, it drives me crazy if I don't publish every last image. So some generic scenery.
The top photo is dated, "June 1950" Number two in the column, "1956 Iowa, Clear Lake." The rest are all complete mysteries, so if anyone can identify the locations, I'll be grateful for the help.
It's time to leave this collection for awhile. Sooner or latter I'll return to it and add some more photos. As always, click on travelers collection in labels to bring up everything to date.

A Beach Front Hotel, The Travelers Collection
I'm starting with the mystery locations early with this group. I went to Google images and entered "historic beach hotels" and found a couple of maybes, but no true match. If anyone out there recognizes the building leave a comment. There's one thing for sure, those palm trees eliminate Bar Harbor, Maine.
Click on travelers collection in the labels section for the other images in the lot.

Summertime....
....and the livin' is easy. Not really. I suspect that summertime in L.A. is going to be unpleasantly hot this year. But, at least we have a beach, crowded though it may be.

Hanging Out At the Beach
The streak is probably a light leak in the camera. Hey, I used to work in a photo lab and I notice these things. What can I say. A group of bathers hanging out on an upturned boat. Probably from the twenties. I don't know why I equate the sea wall with Europe, but I do. Are these people part of Gertrude Stein's lost generation, living in Europe, running from the wall street, and the roaring twenties?

Swimming at the Creek
If you grew up in a small rural town like I did, you'd know that a creek lies somewhere betwixt and between a river and a brook. Of course, how that's perceived varies with where you're from. In western Pennsylvania, where I'm grew up, rivers mean the Allegheny or the Ohio and this stream would fall into the creek category. In Nevada, people would probably see it as a good sized river. In any case, it looks like a good place to cool off on a hot summers day. I used to swim in Roaring Run and Crooked Creek. And sometimes, I'd just wade in Hilty's Hollow.
No names, dates or location on the print. There is a processor's mark, "Fox Tone Print, FOX CO. SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS" That doesn't mean much. Fox was a regional lab with a large mail order business.
