More Kiddie Pictures

I mentioned in my last post that, while I don't really collect pictures of children, they have a tendency to show up in the files as throw-ins from some of the lots I buy.  This one is dared "June 1918"  I'd love to know if this photo was taken for a father serving in France, and if that father survived the war. or if her parents survived the flu pandemic that wiped out millions of people, worldwide, in the months after the war.  I know it's a bit morbid, but did she live to see the next World War?   I don't want to get into the whole vaccination debate, but it wasn't uncommon for children, in this era, to die from polio, measles, chicken pox, small pox, whooping cough, and rubella.

Winter In May

In general, I'm not all that big on pictures of kids, but when I buy lots....well they do have a tendency to accumulate.  In any case, this one is a warning on info written on prints.  "May 1952."  This was either shot in the southern hemisphere, or someone made a mistake.  It's not just the winter clothes, it's the bare trees in the background.

Really Big Horses

Written on  the back, "Claude, Frank, Earl, Wilby."  Got to admit it, love the last name.  Anyway, don't know anything about horses, but I do know that there was an age when horses were working animals, pulling wagons and farm machinery.  So, Clydesdales, Percherons, or some other breed?  They all look the same to me.

The Waterbury Paper Box Co. Wedding Album 29

Once again, it's time to return to the Waterbury Paper Box Co. Girls Club.....maybe.  At least, it was taken at the same location, and while there are a lot more girls in this photo, there are also a lot of boys.  Perhaps the girls club is having a Halloween party, and dates were invited.  The costumes are all over the place, and some of the attendees are just nicely dressed rather than all dressed up.   And oh those costumes.  Let's see, girls in top hats and neckties and a couple of boys in ladies bonnets.  There are wizards, nurses and sailors, and two really inappropriate outfits at least by the standards of our day.   Look closely at the black face in the front row, bone in the nose, and grass skirt.  And to that person's left, a girl with a black eye.  Click on the image to bring it up in a bigger window, if needed.

I'll be leaving this album for three to four weeks, and when I return to this collection, I'll post the last five pages and finish things up.  In the mean time, click on Waterbury Box Co. Album in labels to see everything posted, to date.  Remember, start with number one, for the proper order.

The Waterbury Paper Box Co. Wedding Album 28

There are still a few wedding themed photos in the album, and this could be one of them.  Newly weds starting their life together?  Maybe, or perhaps it's an anniversary photo.  Then again, a couple who just wanted a nice picture, together.

The Waterbury Paper Box Co. Wedding Album 27

As I promised when I started posting this album, all is revealed.  Or at least the reason I titled it the Waterbury Wedding Album.  Well, it's not a wedding photo, but the album is dominated by them, and the black, rubber stamped caption on this photo gives us Waterbury, and the Paper Box Co.  And, it predates Where's Waldo, so perhaps the girls club was an inspiration for that silly stripped hat.  Nah, I doubt it.

The Waterbury Paper Box Co. Wedding Album 26

Talk about affluence.  All that fur, captured in a studio photograph.  Kodak made it possible for the average American to record their lives with snapshots but it took a certain amount of money to have a constant stream of studio portraits made.

The Waterbury Paper Box Co. Wedding Album 25

I've still got plenty of The Views of the World collection left, but it's time to revisit The Waterbury Album.  I've got ten pages left to go, all with just one image per page, so this will be the first of a series of five and then after a month or so, it'll be time to finish things up.  Anyway, click on Waterbury Box Co. Album in labels at the bottom of the post to catch up and see an earlier post with this dapper looking gent.  He's got the spats and straw boater, but he's lost the Rudolph Valentino sideburns.  There was some money in this family if nothing else.  Perhaps he was one of those twenties era stockbroker types, and the senior partner at his firm told him to tone down the movie star affectations.

It's faint, but embossed on the bottom of the print, "J.J. STANKUS"

Views of the World, Blarney Castle, Ireland

There's too much information about Blarney Castle for me to type it all, so I'm going to leave it to the reader to Google, Google, and Google again.  In a nutshell, the Blarney Castle in the photo was built in 1446 by Cormac Laider McCarthy, Lord of Muscry.  And yes, I did wonder if the writer is a descendant.  The Blarney Stone is built into the castle's battlement, and legend has it, anyone who kisses the thing will be granted the gift of gab.

Views of the World, Princess Street, Edinburgh, Scotland

What a dilemma.  The card is clearly labeled Princess Street but when I went on line looking for info, all I could find was Princes Street, masculine, not feminine.  Anyway, I'm going with the internet on this one.  That odd looking building in the right center of the card is the Scott Monument, as in writer Sir Walter Scott, is on Princes Street.  My guess, these cards were made from photos purchased from an agency, and the typesetter read the caption wrong.

Views of the World, Cheapside, London, England

Cheapside is a street in London's financial district.  Lots of horse power in the original photograph.  I thought it might be possible to find the original black & white photo on line, but no dice.   I found quite a few that were very similar, but not this exact image.

The Come Hither Look

Do people still use that term?  From the twenties I would think.

Co-Ed Team Or?

This is another of those photos that poses more questions than it answers.  With trainers Mike Brown and Tarzan Miller, this has to be some sort of team photo, but what kind?  If it's a co-ed team then it's a rare thing from the era.  I've never heard of any sort of school sport that had both male and female members.  Perhaps Judge Coffey was the boy's basketball coach, and Muggsy was the girl's coach.  I went to a very small school, and our basketball team only had ten members.  The six boys and six girls in this photo, would be just enough to put out a starting line up with one bench player, so it's possible, but unlikely.  It could be boys team and cheerleaders.  My guess is that this photo is from the fifties, well before Title 9, so there would have been no requirement for a girls team of any kind.

Terrorized Poodles

I'm 60 years old, and it occurs to me that I've never seen a poodle that hasn't been groomed in the weird way that people groom poodles.  If left alone, are they all shaggy?  Dated, "JUL 68"

Don't Mess With the Dalbhas

Admit it.  If you ran into this pair on the street, you'd think twice about saying hello.  Written on the back, "Dalbha."  Not the Dalbhas, not Jack and Sadie.  Just "Dalbha."

Sun And Sand

And maybe the sea, too.  I bought this one here, in California, and there aren't that many places along our coastline that don't have some sort of bluff.  There are, however, more than a few flat and sandy spots out in the desert.  I live just north of downtown L.A. and I rarely get to the ocean. The traffic is a pain, and parking expensive.
