More Germans Enjoying Themselves

I may be on to something here.  My last post was a real photo postcard from Berlin, Germany with the single word "Bene" written on the back.  This is another postcard, trimmed down a bit, printed on Agfa card stock.  The only labeling on this one, a stamp, with another single word, "Larbig"  Anyway, I did a quick Google search, not really expecting much, and I found info on a German furniture company, Larbig & Mortag.  One of their divisions, Bene Office Furniture.  So, Bune, from the previous post, could be a poorly written Bene.   I'm thinking office party.

Bric-A-Brac and Books

As I've mentioned before, my mother was British, and as a young girl (age 13 to 20) she was a maid in an English manor house.  She once described her employment as seven years of dusting.  It seems that the high and the mighty of the British aristocracy couldn't resist gathering up everything they saw on their many trips abroad, and all those things they brought home had to be dusted every few days.  Imagine an economy built around killing dust mites.  It looks like someone in this household was emulating his Lordship.

Actually, it's labeled "Shoulders & Head."  Mid century modern, from the fifties, I would think.

It's Snooky!

I don't have a lot of color photos in the collection, so when I had a chance to buy an envelope with 80 color snapshots for $3, I jumped at the chance.  Of course,at that price, they were sight unseen, and the quality was a bit uneven.  Some of the photos look like they come from a common source, some not, so as I dole them out, I won't add a tag for the collection.

Written on the back, "Snooky 12/19/68"  My mother would have said, "Get that damn dog of the couch!"

California Rooms

As a rule, I wouldn't buy photographs of unoccupied rooms, but I think these two pictures go with an ongoing collection of images that I've tagged SGV family in the labels section at the bottom of the post.  To recap, every so often I go through a tray of old snapshots at a local antique mall.  Constantly replenished, from time to time, I've found photos, all the same format, same weight paper, same era, and the outdoor ones, the same type landscape, and while I can't be sure, probably the same family.

From the first photos I found, it's been clear that there was some prosperity to this family.  Going by these two pictures, I would say that they were in a moneyed way.  Not wealthy.  But well off enough, that comfort wasn't an issue.  Nice furniture, carpets, plenty of bric-a-brac, and electric lights.  Yes, when these pictures were taken, lots of people were still lighting with oil lamps and gas jets.  Of course, there's still an oil lamp too.  After all, in the first decade of the twentieth century, electricity didn't always work.
